
Richard L. Benjamin
Richard Benjamin brings 25 years of successful experience in purchasing and related disciplines to his role as Executive, Materials Management, with Diakon Lutheran Social Ministries. As such he is responsible for procurement and distribution, value analysis, systems development, standardization, process improvement, cost reduction, and inventory management for Diakon.
Mr. Benjamin joined the agency in 1997. At that time, he implemented materials management systems at multiple sites, established a product review process, developed contract databases and terms, identified significant cost reductions, coordinated procurement activities for various locations, negotiated preferred-vendor agreements, and implemented standardization. Before that, he was a purchasing agent with St. Luke’s Hospital in Bethlehem, Pa., Director of Materials Management/Purchasing with Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown, Pa., and Director of Materials Management with Indiana Hospital in Indiana, Pa.
He also has served as a contracts coordinator with Pennsylvania Blue Shield and worked for the state governor ’s office. An U.S. Air Force veteran, Mr. Benjamin holds a bachelor’s degree from Penn State University and has taken courses toward a master’s degree in business administration. Certified as a training facilitator in Total Quality Improvement, he has served on the Editorial Board with Hospital Materials Management, on the Materials Management Negotiating Committee with Voluntary Hospitals of America, and as chair of the North Whitehall Township Zoning Hearing Board in northeastern Pennsylvania. He also has served for more than a decade as the township’s emergency management director.
