In addition to our regular follow-up services during the adoption process, we
offer assistance, through post-adoption services, to adopted individuals as well
as adoptive families. From searching and reuniting adoptive children with their
birth families to making community referrals to assist adoptive families with
concerns, we offer a range of supportive services.
Search and Reunion Services
Search and reunion services offer an adopted individual, 18 years of age
or older, a complete birth-family picture. We may be able to provide an
adopted adult who was placed through our services with valuable family
information as well as reunite him or her with birth parents. Using various
informational tools, we conduct an extensive search to help the adopted
individual achieve his or her goal.
Generalized Assistance and Referrals
Diakon Adoption & Foster Care also offers generalized assistance
to adoptive families. For example, if you have a tax-credit question
pertaining to adoption, or need advice regarding a behavioral problem,
our staff members can often personally assist you. In the event
that we cannot help, we will refer you to a professional who will
best be able to assist you.
Adoption Support Groups (Maryland)
Diakon Adoption Services of Maryland has received grants from the Maryland Department of Human Resources to provide monthly adoption support groups in 10 Maryland counties and the City of
Baltimore for two years, beginning April 2007. The local meetings are open to any adoptive family, not only those who have adopted
through Diakon. Those who want to learn more about adoption or who
are involved in foster care also may attend. Free child-care is provided. The groups focus on topics of interest to adoptive families, including
attachment issues, positive discipline techniques, child development,
educational resources for the child with special needs, and loyalty and
the birth family. Some topics feature guest speakers. Click here for schedule and locations.
