Diakon currently offers Clinical Pastoral Education in two formats:
Extended Unit (Fall/Spring)
The CPE extended unit (fall/spring session) takes place from mid to late September of one year through March of the next. The session meets one day or evening a week for educational and clinical sessions, for a minimum of 100 hours of classroom time and an additional 300 hours of clinical experience.
Educational classes meet at The Lutheran Home at Topton, a Diakon Senior Living Community in Berks County, Pa. (not far from Reading). The clinical experience takes place in an agreed-upon setting.
Summer Unit
The intensive summer program for 2012 begins May 30 and concludes August 14, taking place over 11 weeks, with students involved in CPE training full-time during the session. Minimum numbers of classroom and clinical hours are the same as for the fall/spring session. As with the fall/spring program, educational classes take place at The Lutheran Home at Topton, a Diakon Senior Living Community in Berks County, Pa. (not far from Reading). The clinical experience can occur in a variety of settings.
The summer session includes housing for students and covers some travel costs.
