A tradition of care
George Frey, a German immigrant who came to the colonies in the
mid-1700s, was a generous man who knew only of hard work and
sacrifice. Selling items by horseback to local Indians along the
Susquehanna River, he later had a horse-packing business, which he sold to
open a store in Middletown and a gristmill on the Swatara Creek.
Together
with his wife, Catherine, Frey built a valuable estate. Convinced that he
should use his wealth to benefit those less fortunate than he, Frey
constructed a building on the current site of St. Peter Lutheran
Church, Middletown, that he hoped would be the realization of his dream of
a home for orphans. Before he could see his dream become a reality, he
passed away in 1806.
His estate, however, carried on his dreams and opened the orphanage, later
relocated to the current site of Frey Village. While changing societal
needs brought a close to the era of orphanages, they didn’t end
Frey’s vision of services reaching out to those in need within the
community. With the assistance of what became known as the Emaus Orphans
House Board of Trustees, Tressler Lutheran Services—now Diakon Lutheran
Social Ministries—developed a modern senior living community on the site: Frey
Village.
