Girls on the run, Diakon

Make a difference in the life of a girl ... volunteer!

Our volunteers include a dynamic group of people who are committed to empowering girls so that they can become healthy and happy adolescents and adults. Running experience is not a pre-requisite to volunteer in one of the following ways.

Coach a Girls on the Run program

  • Meet once or twice a week for 10 weeks with a team of 12 to 15 girls to lead an engaging curriculum and train the girls to participate in a season-end 5K event.
  • You must be at least 21 years old (assistant coaches must be at least 18).
  • All training and support is provided by Girls on the Run of Lehigh County.

Be a running buddy

This is a great opportunity for those who want to be involved, but can't make the commitment to volunteer weekly for 10 weeks. Running Buddies are asked to:

  • Run with a girl or group of girls at one of our two season-end 5K events each year (Spring and Fall).
  • Be a personal cheerleader for your girl/girls. As taught at practice, the girls are NOT competing against each other. The Girls on the Run curriculum teaches them to be confident, unique and supportive of their team members.
  • Be encouraging while still respecting the girls varying abilities. Some are walkers, some are runners. They can walk, skip or run, as long as they are having fun!
  • Encourage pacing. Although this is taught to the girls during the program, many girls struggle with pacing come race day because of their excitement for the event.
  • Be supportive. For many of the girls this will be their first 5k experience so they may be a bit nervous.
  • Be enthusiastic and have fun! Get to know your girl. Take pictures, color-spray your hair at the Happy Hair station, get a GOTR "tattoo," and get your girl psyched to accomplish the goal she's working towards for nine weeks.
  • Be flexible. We can not emphasize enough the importance of flexibility. Working with kids means embracing chaos and last-minute changes!
  • You must be at least 18 years old and have sufficient running experience to complete a 5K event.
  • All Running Buddies must pre-register for each season's 5k event.
  • All running buddies must have a background check on file with GOTRLC prior to being approved as a Running Buddy.
  • Click here to register as a RB for our upcoming race.

Volunteer for the season-end 5K event

  • Volunteer just for the day of the race or join our planning committee to develop a festive celebration to make a memorable day for the girls.
  • We need people to assist with set-up, registration, water stops, general activities, photography, food distribution, clean-up, and lots of finish-line cheerleaders.

In addition, we always need financial support. Click here to make your gift to this local program that makes a difference in so many young lives.
