The Program

KidShape® is a family-based pediatric weight-management program designed for families with children, ages 6-14. Started in California in 1987 by a pediatric endocrinologist who specializes treating in overweight kids and kids with diabetes, the goal of the nine-week program is to promote healthy lifestyles, including healthy eating, physical activity, and positive self-esteem for entire families with overweight youth.

When a child is overweight, it is difficult because many parents do not know how to help their children lose weight and be healthy. Obesity can cause health problems that used to be seen primarily in adults, including type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol. And many children suffer from depression, low self esteem, and isolation after being teased because of their weight. KidShape® can help!

Made possible through funding by Highmark Healthy High 5, a children's health promotion initiative of the Highmark Foundation, KidShape® teaches the entire family how to eat more nutritiously, make exercise a fun part of the daily routine, form new healthy habits, and to like themselves, regardless of size. A team of health experts consisting of a registered dietitian, a mental health professional, a physical activity expert, and a health educator administers each program.
