How It Works

At KidShape®, we offer a nine-week fun-filled program that will start your child and your whole family on a lifetime of health and improved self-image. Each class has up to 20 children and meets for two hours once a week.

One parent/guardian is required to attend with each enrolled child, but all family members who have an interest are invited to attend.

But even more important (especially to a kid!), KidShape® makes weight management fun through:

  • Interactive Games
  • Cooking Demos
    • requiring minimal cooking equipment
    • Pre-class activities
    • KidShape Café® recipe book introduces families to quick, easy, kid-friendly meals and snacks
  • Hands-on learning with minimal “sit-down” discussion
  • Rewards and prizes proven to keep families motivated and returning to class
  • Skill building, non-competitive physical activity
  • Parent/youth binders (also available in Spanish) to carry learning beyond the classroom

Why it works

  • KidShape® teaches and motivates entire families (not just the parents and not just the kids) to eat healthy and improve physical activity.
  • KidShape® helps kids feel good about themselves regardless of their size.
  • Each member of the family learns fun ways to exercise, how to change eating behaviors, and how to be a supportive team member.
  • KidShape® is taught by credentialed professionals
  • Program design is culturally sensitive and tailored for the community served by the site
  • KidShape® uses proven behavior modification tools to pave the way for success
    • Contracting
    • Self-monitoring
    • Role modeling
    • Positive reinforcement

KidShape® Classes

The instructors are enthusiastic; the lessons are kid-friendly; and there are always games and time for exercise. We make the classes something your child looks forward to.

Each class lasts two hours and consists of nutrition, physical activity and group discussion.

  • A registered dietitian teaches adults and kids about the right way to eat to live a healthier lifestyle.
  • Adults and children meet in separate groups with a behavior change specialist. The support you will receive from other parents and your child will receive from other kids is a key to changing old habits.
  • Families engage in fun, physical activity together during the second ten minutes of every class and while the adults have an opportunity to discuss more specific questions, the kids have at least 30 minutes of continuous fun, aerobic exercise.

During two of the weeks, the adults join the 30 minutes of activity with the kids.
