At Diakon Lutheran Social Ministries and The Lutheran Home at Topton, we define a volunteer as more than just someone who voluntarily him- or herself for service. Volunteer escort
Volunteer escorts accompany residents to medical appointments off-campus. You would join one of our residents in our vehicle, driven by a Diakon driver. No special training needed. Must be available in the morning.
Volunteer transport
Moving non-ambulatory residents in wheelchairs is one of the most important functions a volunteer can perform on our campus, assisting residents in participating in activities, getting to hairdresser appointments, or just outside for a breath of fresh air. No special training needed. Morning or afternoon opportunities available.
‘Music to our ears’
Bring your voice or instrument and experience the joy that music spreads; flexible times and dates.
Physical activity program leader
Lead a 30-minute exercise class for residents from our personal care center from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Great music, socialization, and exercise!
Topic-leader-of-the-day ...
Lead residents in discussion groups with a topic of your choice or a specified topic from an interesting trip or experience. Great opportunity for school teachers, travelers, and avid readers. Flexible times and dates.
Worship service escort
Residents have the opportunity to attend worship services Thursday afternoons and Sunday mornings. Volunteers are needed to help residents get to and from these services. Services are held at 2:30 p.m. Thursdays and 10:30 a.m. Sundays. This activity is a great opportunity for families and youth groups.
‘Can you remember?’
Work one-on-one with residents using the Dakim BrainFitness™ system. This is an easy and fun-to-use computer system. Daytime hours available.
Oral reader
Read short stories, poems, or other text passages to small groups of resident who have enjoyed a lifelong love of reading, but are no longer able to pursue that interest. Flexible times available mid-morning, afternoons, or early evenings.
Journaling/creative writing
Write a story, bio, or creative piece about a resident or keep a journal about your experience as a volunteer and share with our volunteer “writers’ group.”
