Diakon (from the Greek diaconia, meaning “one who serves”) was founded in January 2000 by the affiliation of Lutheran Services Northeast and Tressler Lutheran Services.

As a result of corporate restructuring and reorganization in 2007, the organization now consists of Diakon and its four subsidiaries, Diakon Lutheran Social Ministries, the Diakon Lutheran Fund, Diakon Housing & Development, and The Institute for Strategic Management, and several non-controlled HUD entities. The president/CEO serves as the chief executive officer of Diakon, DLSM, DLF, DHD and ISM. The parent entity, Diakon, has specific approval rights involving its subsidiaries and is charged with overall strategic vision.

Diakon Lutheran Social Ministries, a Pennsylvania non-profit corporation, is the primary operating entity for Diakon and provides both senior living services and communities and a comprehensive range of social services for children, families, and adult individuals.
Diakon Lutheran Fund, a Pennsylvania non-profit corporation, oversees investments and advanced fund-raising activities, income from which supports services and programs provided by Diakon Lutheran Social Ministries.
Diakon Housing and Development, Inc., a Maryland non-profit corporation, was developed to focus on housing and community services for low- to moderate-income persons.
The Institute for Strategic Management, a Pennsylvania for-profit corporation, was created in 2009 to provide business management services to other organizations.
