Diakon sells Twining Village, Holland, Bucks County, Pennsylvania

Diakon Lutheran Social Ministries has sold Twining Village to a private investment group, MED Healthcare Partners, effective Aug. 3, 2020.

Diakon made the decision to sell Twining Village after careful assessment of its senior living portfolio and strategic plan, as well as the requirements for capital expenditures that plan will entail.

Diakon operates senior living communities in eight other markets of Pennsylvania and Maryland, with capital needs. The sale of the village better positions Diakon to continue expansion or enhancement of services in a number of those other markets.

“We believe we have selected an excellent partner in MED Healthcare Partners to complete this transition. MED will continue the Twining Village tradition of service and care for both residents and staff members,” says Mark Pile, Diakon president/CEO. “In selecting MED, we deliberately chose a senior living provider with sufficient experience, capital resources and geographic presence to enhance Twining Village’s impact on the local community.”

MED currently owns and operates another Continuing Care Retirement Community in the Philadelphia region. Associates of MED have owned and operated skilled nursing and long-term care facilities for multiple generations. Pile said MED’s expertise in skilled nursing operations is expected to prove beneficial to current and future operations at Twining Village.

“We did not make this decision lightly,” Pile adds. “Twining Village and its staff members have played a vital role in the Diakon mission to serve people for nearly 15 years. During that time, the village has provided nursing care, personal care and independent-living accommodations for thousands of people and had a significant impact on the Bucks County region.”

Meetings were held Aug. 3 and 4 with staff members and residents to introduce the new owners, provide additional information and begin the transition process.

Background

Twining Village, located at 280 Middle Holland Road in Holland, Pennsylvania, is a Continuing Care Retirement Community that offers 155 senior independent living units, 115 personal care beds (including a 25-bed memory care unit), and 66 skilled-care beds.

Diakon has made significant investments in Twining Village since it acquired the community from a local builder/developer in 2006. Those investments included the construction of new and renovated independent living homes and apartments, extensive renovations of common areas including dining and lobby facilities, the development of a memory care unit, renovations in the nursing and personal care communities and exterior refurbishment.

Transaction Partners

MED currently operates over 80 communities in 16 states including Pennsylvania, Maryland and New Jersey with more than 8,000 certified nursing beds.

Following the sale, Diakon Lutheran Social Ministries will operate eight other Continuing Care Retirement Communities in Pennsylvania and western Maryland.

Diakon Lutheran Social Ministries’ “sister” organization, Diakon Child, Family & Community Ministries, provides a range of services—including adoption, foster care, counseling, family preservation and reunification services, and programs for youths at risk of not realizing their potential—in eastern and central Pennsylvania.

In 2019, the two Diakon organizations served more than 100,000 people.
