Location. Location. Location.
Situated in the heart of the Cumberland Valley in Carlisle,
Pennsylvania, Cumberland Crossings is a Continuing Care Retirement
Community that boasts an 80-acre, expertly landscaped, tranquil campus. Yet
the amenities associated with urban centers are nearby. Harrisburg
and Gettysburg are only a short distance from Cumberland Crossings,
while even larger areas, such as Baltimore and Philadelphia, are easily
accessed from nearby interstates and the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
Comprehensive health care is also readily available. Cumberland Crossings
is just minutes from the Carlisle Regional Medical Center as well as a multitude
of private physician practices and specialty medical centers, which serve
the majority of the Carlisle population. Today, more than 20,000 citizens
live and work in Carlisle, which serves as the county seat of Cumberland
County.
Home to historic Dickinson College and Penn State University's Dickinson
School of Law, Carlisle boasts many cultural, recreational, and
educational opportunities. Quaint shops, historical buildings, and
diverse ethnic dining establishments line downtown streets. The area
hosts malls, several theatres, and an annual car show that draws a crowd
from all over the United States. Carlisle is also home to the U.S. Army
War College at Carlisle Barracks, which gives full privileges to retired
military personnel.
With a rich 250-year history, Carlisle was home to Revolutionary and
Civil War troops as well as such American historical figures as Molly
Pitcher, James Wilson, and Jim Thorpe.
Abundant Social, Recreational, and Cultural Activities
In addition to the area’s multitude of social, recreational, and
cultural offerings, Cumberland Crossings sponsors a
range of programs and events designed to make life for residents active
and engaging. Other special activities are developed to maximize
independence and nurture physical, emotional, and spiritual health.
Residents may participate in the Residents Council, which serves as
an informative forum for community happenings or join the Cumberland
Crossings Auxiliary. Offering events such as holiday celebrations, theme
dinners, shopping excursions, Bible studies, worship services, swimming
programs, Tai Chi, craft classes, and speaker series, Cumberland Crossings
always has a diverse social calendar!
Cumberland Crossings Auxiliary
Dedicated to enhancing the lifestyle within the retirement community, the
Cumberland Crossings Auxiliary is open to all residents, family members of
residents, and any other interested persons. Auxiliary members are very
active and dedicated, assisting with fundraisers, helping in the gift
shop, and tending to vacationing residents’ pets or plants. Auxiliary
members help to bring true community to Cumberland Crossings.
A Tradition of Service
In the early 1980s, the former Carlisle Hospital’s board of directors decided
to reach out to the community beyond the scope of normal hospital
operations by building a retirement community that could offer a complete
range of services—senior living accommodations, assisted living, and nursing
care. Parcels of land, totaling 80 acres, in South Middleton Township were
assembled for the project and construction began. Today, the site holds 115 retirement living cottages, a community center, and
several care centers.
In 2001, the Carlisle Area Health and Wellness Foundation was established
from the proceeds of the sale of the assets of Carlisle Hospital and
Health Services Inc. to Health Management Associates and the transfer of
related endowments and trusts. Wanting to continue Cumberland Crossings’ community
outreach, the foundation searched for an entity to purchase the retirement
community. They selected Diakon Lutheran Social Ministries, citing its
organizational philosophy and sense of mission as perfect matches for the
Cumberland Crossings community.
