Who Are the Luthererans?
And Why Did We Start So Many Social Ministry Organizations?
Aware that the majority of its staff members are not Lutheran, but wanting them to understand the reason
Diakon and similar Lutheran social ministry organizations serve those in need, Diakon Lutheran Social
Ministries in 2008 began an effort to create orientation materials about social ministry. The resulf of that
effort was Who Are The Lutherans? And Why Did We Start So Many Social Ministry Organizations? The materials
provide a glimpse of Lutheran theology and outline how Lutheran social ministry arose from that theological
perspective.
The goal of the information, certainly, is not to have all staff members be Lutheran, but rather to have
a shared sense of the mission and ministry of Diakon. The materials, which include a pamphlet, a 24-page
booklet, and a DVD, were created in concert with The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia. Although
the materials were created for staff orientation, there are evolving plans to use them with senior living
residents and program clients, as well as within congregational settings. The materials also are easily
adaptable for use by other Lutheran social ministry organizations, in concert with the seminary.
