When the final season of a loved one's life comes to an end, a wide range of emotions comes into
play for family and friends. These feelings-grief, anger, and loss-are as natural as the sun's
rising and setting, but most often people who have suffered a loss feel completely alone.
For that reason, Diakon Hospice Saint John offers grief support services. Providing support through
personal visits, phone calls, and structured and informal group sessions, we help people through
one of life's most difficult experiences.

To Diakon Hospice Saint John, care of the loved ones left behind is just as important as hospice care.
-
Support Groups
Diakon Hospice Saint John offers a number of informal support groups through which people are
encouraged to share their experiences. Often support groups help participants to gain
insight into the grief process while sharing their experiences and insights with others
in a supportive setting.
-
Grief Workshops
Grief workshops allow people to learn more about the grieving process. Each session
focuses on a component of grief and gives attendees time for introspection, building new
support systems, and learning to make adjustments.
Scheduled regularly throughout the year and running for six consecutive weeks, workshops
are held at varying times to accommodate different schedules. See our Coming Events
(link) for dates and times of upcoming workshops.
A previous association with Diakon Hospice Saint John is not needed or
required to attend support groups or grief workshops. The service offers community-based
grief support to anyone in need.
-
Individual and Family Counseling
Available the first year after a patient's death, this program provides one-on-one
support to individuals or families who want to examine their feelings and explore
positive, personal approaches to dealing with death.
-
Bereavement Volunteers
Sometimes, you just need a friend to lean on-someone who truly understands the dynamics of
the grieving process. That someone is a Diakon Hospice Saint John bereavement volunteer. By
making phone calls, visiting, or sending out cards, our volunteers follow-up with loved
ones throughout the first year after the death of a Diakon Hospice Saint John patient.
