Girls on the Run – Lehigh Valley receives community foundation grant

Allentown, Pa. (Wednesday March 23, 2016)

Girls on the Run – Lehigh Valley has received a $2,500 grant from the Outdoor Recreation Fund for Youth of the Lehigh Valley Community Foundation.

The grant supports the Diakon Child, Family & Community Ministries-sponsored program in serving girls from throughout the Lehigh Valley region. The program depends on contributions and grants, particularly in terms of offering scholarships to youths who might not otherwise be able to participate.

Girls on the Run is a physical activity-based youth development program for girls in third through eighth grades, teaching life skills through interactive lessons and running games. The program culminates with the girls being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5k running event each season.

In 2015, the local program served 558 girls at 33 host sites in the Lehigh Valley. More than 150 volunteer coaches contributed some 3,000 hours to the program last year.
