Northern Region: Schuylkill & Northern Dauphin Counties

Important note only for the Schuylkill office. Effective July 31, 2016, we are discontinuing the transportation-assistance component of the Diakon Volunteers Serving Services program (again, however, only in the program’s “Northern Region”).

Please note that food-tote delivery through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and telephone reassurance will continue to be provided to our clients in this region. In addition, this change does not affect the Topton-based regions served by Diakon Volunteers Serving Seniors.

This change has been necessiated by four trends: the availability in the region of other no- or low-cost transportation services available for our client-population, a significant decline in the number of volunteer-drivers, a similar decline in the number of requests for transportation assistance, and a decrease in the contributions that have made this service possible. The program deficit for just the first four months of 2016 was $27,000, an amount we cannot sustain.

As noted, however, the remaining services of food-tote delivery and telephone reassurance will continue through our Pottsville office. As always, our volunteers are trained and supported by program staff, but the volunteers’ special touch is the reason this outreach ministry touches lives in meaningful ways.

Southern Region: Greater Berks Area

In the program’s Greater Berks, or “Southern Region,” Diakon Volunteers Serving Seniors services include companionship, transportation to medical appointments, assistance with acquiring good and groceries, and referrals to additional local service-providers.

The program provides service on a short-term or intermittent basis and works in complement with other human services and assistance provided by family members or friends. Because services are offered at no cost to the individual, Diakon Volunteers Serving Seniors relies on the generosity of donors to make its ministry possible.

This non-medical assistance is provided through caring volunteers from local communities and congregations. Volunteers are trained and supported by program staff, but the volunteers’ special touch is the reason this outreach ministry is so successful.

The Topton office serves all of Berks County. The Berks program is funded, in part, under a contract with money allocated by the Pennsylvania Department of Aging and the Berks County Commissioners through the Berks County Office of Aging. In addition, the program relies on the generous support of partner churches and individuals.
