Volunteers: In their own words ...

The Diakon Wilderness Center is always in need of volunteers, but the benefits of volunteering accrue not just to the center and its programs. Here is what volunteers had to say about the experience:

“I was able to help one Saturday afternoon at the Diakon Wilderness Center. To be honest, I wasn’t thrilled to get up early and go help out at a place I had nothing to do with (especially knowing I wouldn’t get good cell phone service) and for people I had no idea who they were. On our way to the center, my mom told me what it was all about. Then not only did I not want to go and help them out, but I was pretty freaked out to be around kids who would be in jail if they weren’t here.

“Then I starting meeting staff members and family and everyone was so sweet. When I was working on cleaning leaves and rocks from an area, I would look up every once in a while, and everyone had a smile on their face, and let’s just say the joy was contagious. When we were finished, everyone was still smiling and I can say that I was very proud of myself and that I actually helped someone other than myself. This experience was not only humbling, but it also taught me that there is more to life than just good cell phone service or hanging out with your friends. You can make people happy and help them out when they need it.”

“Early one Saturday afternoon changed my heart. My mom told me what the Diakon Wilderness Center is about. She said kids who don’t make the best choices get sent here. I was a little annoyed that it was a super-hot day and that I didn’t know anybody. I got sent to raking, and I really hate raking, but I just kept raking and raking and about two hours into raking my heart just felt nice because of helping people ... and I thought to myself it was worth all the blisters.”

“I felt compelled to ... let [you] know what a great time we ... had on our visit to the center. My 14-year-old son had volunteered with our church group a few weeks ago and had such a good time with Rob Kivlan that he insisted our DeMolay group had to volunteer. Everyone in our group had so much fun. Rob, Marvin, and Tom were so good with the boys. In this world where people are so quick to complain about what is wrong, I feel that it is important to let those in charge know when their employees are doing a great job. We all look forward to coming back and volunteering again!
