Diakon youth program to hold annual 5K outdoor challenge

Boiling Springs, Pa. (Monday August 26, 2019)

Diakon Youth Services will hold its annual Outdoor Adventure Challenge at the Diakon Wilderness Center, 571 Mountain Rd., at 9 a.m. Sept. 14.

Set on the mountainous trails of the wilderness center, the course is off-road and does include some steep inclines, says Jason Brode, Diakon Youth Services executive director. Proceeds benefit Diakon’s services for at-risk adolescents and young adults.

The challenge consists of a 5K trail walk/run, with prizes awarded to the top three finishers in all age groups, as well as overall top three male and female participants. The groups are 12 and under and then 13 to 19, 20 to 29 and so on to age 60 and older.

Registration opens at 7:30 a.m., with the trail run/walk beginning at 9. The 5K awards ceremony takes place at 10 a.m., with all other activities continuing until noon or 1 p.m.

Those who pre-register receive lunch and use of the center’s zip-line, Alpine Tower, giant swing, climbing wall and high ropes course. The event also will include a half-mile “fun run,” along with such “kids’ corner” activities as a giant inflatable slide and petting zoo. The event’s finish line and chip-timing services will be provided by Pretzel City Sports.
